Disposal of household waste

Waste disposal from private households and thus also residual waste from private households is the responsibility of the respective public waste disposal authority.
In Hamburg, the Hamburg city cleaning department is responsible for this as the public waste disposal agency.

Detailed description

The disposal of waste from private households and other disposal waste from other areas of origin is the task of the public waste disposal authorities. In the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the Hamburg city cleaning department is responsible for this.
All waste that cannot be disposed of in any other way and is not harmful to the environment is collected in the residual waste bin. If you, as a person who owns real estate, have a different garbage can or would like to change the collection frequency for your garbage can, please contact the Hamburg city cleaning department directly. All tenants should contact their landlord in this regard.
 

Information

Prerequisites

  • Please throw all waste that cannot be recycled, that is not hazardous to the environment and that is suitable in terms of its type and size, into the residual waste bin.
  • Your contribution to reducing residual waste is waste avoidance and recycling through separation: organic kitchen and garden waste belongs in the green organic bin, packaging and small waste made of metal and plastic in the yellow Hamburg recycling bins and bags. For paper there is the blue paper bin from the Hamburg city cleaning department and the depot containers. You can dispose of used glass free of charge via depot containers.

Documents required

To order a residual waste bin, please contact your landlord. Property owners please contact the Hamburg city cleaning department. Among other things, your customer number is required for this.

  • Please understand that the employees of the Hamburg City Cleaning Department are not allowed to accept money (tips).
  • If you provide the residual waste bin for collection yourself, please ensure that it does not pose a risk to other road users.

If you provide the residual waste bin for collection yourself, please leave it at the curb by 6 a.m.

Processing time


  • When collecting the residual waste bin, please note the waste disposal calendar of the Hamburg city cleaning department and the opening hours of the recycling centers. When it comes to residual waste collection, there are occasionally postponements, for example due to public holidays.

Fees


  • The basic waste management fee is 7.22 euros per month.

  • The costs for the black residual waste bin are calculated according to the size of the vessel or container and the transport route.

  • The recycling centers also accept most waste from private households free of charge. Additional fees are only charged for a small number of wastes, the subsequent treatment of which is costly.
