You dispose of your household's organic waste via your organic waste bin.



Larger quantities of green waste from the garden can be disposed of at the twelve recycling centers in Hamburg.

Please note

Do you put your organic waste bin out for collection yourself? Make sure that the bin does not endanger road users.



The following belong in the organic waste bin:

  • Kitchen waste
  • Fruit, vegetable and cooked food leftovers
  • Coffee filters and coffee grounds, tea grounds and tea bags
  • Dairy products without packaging
  • Bread and rolls, eggshells
  • small quantities of small animal bedding made from wood shavings, straw and hay
  • Garden waste
  • Flowers, potting soil and garden waste of all kinds
  • Grass, shrub and tree pruning
  • Leaves and wild herbs
  • Plant remains
  • cut flowers
  • Potted plants with root balls
  • Hair and feathers
  • sawdust
  • small amounts of newspaper

When using the organic waste bin, please note:

  • Do not put organic waste in plastic bags, including bioplastics.
  • You can use the free organic waste bags provided by the Hamburg city cleaning department.
  • You should place the organic waste bin in a shady spot.
  • You should line the bottom of the bin with newspaper.
  • The bin should always be securely closed.
  • Do not dispose of liquids or cat litter in the organic waste bin.
  • If possible, you should place a layer of coarser material in the bin.
  • Wrap wet kitchen waste in newspaper or use paper bags.
  • Dry the mowed grass before filling it.
  • You can use rock flour to reduce excessive moisture in the barrel.
  • To prevent waste from freezing solid in winter, leaves or crumpled paper can be used.
  • When you put out the organic waste bin for collection, you must not create a hazard for other road users.
  • When disposing of heavy waste such as fallen fruit or shredded material, the organic waste bin should only be filled to a maximum of two-thirds full. Otherwise, the bin will be too heavy to be moved by one person.

If you are putting out the organic waste bin for collection yourself, please place it at the curbside by 6 a.m.

Procedure

  • You can order a compost bin through your landlord.
  • If you are a property owner, please contact the Hamburg city cleaning department with your customer number.
  • If you have any questions about the procedure, please contact the Hamburg city cleaning department.

Processing time



The organic waste bin is emptied according to the Hamburg city cleaning department's collection schedule.

Fees

The costs are calculated based on container size and transport route:


  • 80 l container self-transport: EUR 1.93

  • 120 l container self-transport: EUR 2.21

  • 240 l container self-transport: EUR 3.47

  • 500 l container, up to 25 m: 9.97 EUR

  • 770 l container, up to 25 m: 12.82 EUR

  • 1,100 l container, up to 25 m: 15.33 EUR

  • The city cleaning service gives you 30 free compostable bags per year.
