If you keep vertebrates of specially protected species, you must notify the competent authority of the start or end of keeping or of any changes to the stock.

Detailed description

Vertebrates of specially protected species are subject to mandatory registration. If you are a keeper of specially protected vertebrate species, you must notify the responsible authority upon commencement of keeping them and state the number of animals (stock). After registering the stock, you must report in writing every addition and removal (stock change), along with their identification. You must also report any relocation of the specially protected vertebrate species.

You are the keeper of vertebrates of specially protected species.

Documents required

  • Form “Inventory report in accordance with Section 7 Paragraph 2 of the Federal Species Protection Ordinance for specially protected animals”
  • Evidence of the legal origin of the animals

Please note

The specially protected species include the majority of exotic animal species, such as parrot birds, turtles, snakes, lizard species such as day geckos and chameleons, but also numerous native species and all European songbird species.

It is possible, for example, to check whether certain species are designated as particularly protected in the Scientific Information System for International Species Protection (WISIA) or in the annexes to the Federal Species Protection Ordinance.

Deadlines

You must report this immediately or at the latest four weeks after the animal has been taken into possession, handed over, died or escaped.

  • You fill out the form “Inventory report in accordance with Section 7 Paragraph 2 of the Federal Species Protection Ordinance for specially protected animals”.
  • You attach evidence of the legal origin of the animals to the form.
  • You send the form to the responsible authority
