To work as a test engineer for civil engineering, you require recognition from the responsible authority.

Detailed description

You can apply for recognition as a structural safety testing engineer for the fields of solid construction, metal construction or timber construction.



As a test engineer for construction technology, you are responsible for the independent testing of construction projects. You ensure that technical and legal requirements are met.



Your tasks include:

  • review of construction plans
  • checking the stability
  • evaluation of technical construction measures
  • construction monitoring
  • Cooperation with architects, developers, engineers and authorities

Depending on your field of expertise, you may need special expertise in testing and evaluating appropriate construction methods.



The work of structural engineers is essential to ensure the safety, quality and durability of structures. Particularly in large, complex or safety-critical projects, structural engineers are required by law to carry out independent inspections.

Prerequisites

  • You have completed a university degree in civil engineering with a focus on solid construction, metal construction or timber construction.
  • You can provide evidence of several years of practical experience in the field of structural engineering and structural safety.
  • You have special knowledge and skills in one of the specialist areas of solid construction, metal construction or timber construction.
  • There are no conflicts of interest and you carry out your work as a test engineer independently.
  • You can prove your qualifications and experience and submit relevant work samples and reference projects.
  • You are reliable and professionally competent to carry out the corresponding tasks.
  • They meet the legal requirements and comply with all other conditions according to the testing regulations.

Documents required

According to the PVO, the application must contain, among other things, the following documents:


- Application form


- CV


- certificates


- certificate of good conduct


- Proof of place of business and possible branches


- Evidence of special requirements (see PVO §10 point 2.)

The recognition of test engineers and test experts will be revoked if the business residence is relocated outside of Hamburg.

Procedure

  • You fill out the application form for recognition as a testing engineer for civil engineering and submit it to the responsible authority along with the required documents.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and documents. If necessary, it will request further documents or information from you.
  • The responsible body checks whether you meet the general and special requirements according to the Testing Ordinance.
  • You demonstrate in a practical procedure or examination that you have the necessary skills. This includes preparing and checking static proofs as well as specialist knowledge of building regulations.
  • If you have successfully passed all exams, you will receive provisional recognition as a test engineer for civil engineering.
  • You will complete a two-year candidate period during which you will be supervised by the Testing Center for Construction Technology.
  • If you have successfully completed the candidate period, you will receive your recognition as a test engineer for civil engineering.
  • They are subject to the technical supervision of the Testing Institute for Construction Technology and assume tasks in the field of building supervision.

Processing time

The recognition process takes approximately 3 months.


This is followed by a two-year support phase, which is mandatory until final recognition.

Fees

500 EUR per subject area for recognition.


Project-dependent support costs will be incurred over the course of a further 2 years
