Apply for recognition as a specialist dentist with a professional qualification from the EU/EEA/Switzerland

Detailed description

To work as a specialist dentist in Germany, you need a government license. Only with this license are you allowed to use the professional title and practice in that profession.

If you acquired your professional qualification in a member state of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or in Switzerland, you must have your foreign professional qualification recognized in order to obtain permission.

 

Information

Prerequisites

  • You already have a valid state professional license (approbation) as a dentist or a professional permit in Germany.
  • You want to work as a specialist dentist in Germany.
  • You have a comparable professional qualification from a member state of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland
  • Their professional qualifications are equivalent.
    • The professional qualification is equivalent if there are no significant differences between your professional qualification and the German professional qualification.

Documents required

  • Curriculum vitae with information on completed further training and professional experience
  • Proof of identity (ID card or passport)
  • Proof of German approbation or professional license and proof of the equivalent level of training
  • Proof of further training and certificates of professional experience
  • Written declaration as to whether you have already submitted an application for recognition to another medical association

You only need to submit the following documents if your professional qualification was completed before a certain date (key date). The competent authority will inform you:

  • Certificate of Conformity or
  • Evidence that you have actually and lawfully practiced the profession continuously for at least 3 years during the last 5 years before the certificate was issued.

If your documents are not in German, you must submit German translations of your documents. The translations must be made by translators who are publicly appointed or authorized.

Procedure

  • You submit your application to the responsible authority.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and request any missing documents or information from you.
  • The responsible body will compare whether your professional qualification is equivalent to the German professional qualification.
    • If the competent authority finds significant differences, you may be able to refute this by taking an examination.
  • If you meet all the requirements, your foreign professional qualification will be recognized. The responsible authority can confirm the result in writing.
  • You will receive permission to use the professional title.

Processing time

You will receive confirmation of receipt within one month of submitting your application. A decision on your application will be made no later than three months after receipt of your complete documents. This deadline can be extended by one month.
