Apply for recognition as a specialist pharmacist with professional qualifications from a third country

Detailed description

To work as a specialist pharmacist in Germany, you need a government license. Only with this license can you use the professional title and practice in the profession.

If you acquired your professional qualification in a third country, you must have your foreign professional qualification recognized to obtain a permit. Third countries are all countries that are not part of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland.

Prerequisites

  • You already have a valid state professional license (approbation) as a pharmacist or a professional permit in Germany.
  • You want to work as a specialist pharmacist in Germany.
  • You have a comparable professional qualification from a third country.
  • Their professional qualifications are equivalent.
    • The professional qualification is equivalent if there are no significant differences between your professional qualification and the German professional qualification.
  • You are reliable for work and have no criminal record.
  • You can work mentally and physically in the profession.
  • You have German language skills at the required level. This is usually level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Documents required

  • Curriculum vitae with information on completed further training and professional experience
  • Proof of identity (ID card or passport)
  • Proof of German approbation or professional license and proof of the equivalent level of training
  • Proof of further training and certificates of professional experience
  • Written declaration as to whether you have already submitted an application for recognition to another Chamber of Pharmacists

If your documents are not in German, you must submit German translations of your documents. The translations must be made by translators who are publicly appointed or authorized.

Procedure

  • You submit your application to the responsible authority.
  • The responsible authority will examine your application and request any missing documents or information from you.
  • The responsible body will compare whether your professional qualification is equivalent to the German professional qualification.
    • If the competent authority identifies significant differences, you may be able to compensate for them.
  • If your professional qualifications are equivalent or you have been able to compensate for any significant differences, and you meet the other requirements, your foreign professional qualification will be recognized. The responsible authority can confirm the result in writing.
  • You will receive permission to use the professional title.

Processing time

You will receive confirmation of receipt within one month of submitting your application. A decision on your application will be made no later than three months after receipt of your complete documents. This deadline can be extended by one month.
