Detailed description

The nomination process determines who is nominated and eligible for an election. Different regulations apply depending on the type of election. You must always submit your nomination along with all required forms.

European elections:
Nominations can be submitted by parties and voter associations. The Federal Returning Commission is responsible.

Federal election:
Nominations can be submitted by parties and individual candidates. The state and district electoral commission is responsible.

Citizens' election:
Nominations can be submitted by parties, voter associations, and individual candidates. The responsible authority is the state and district electoral commission.

District assembly election:
Nominations can be submitted by parties, voter associations, and individual candidates. The District Electoral Commission is responsible.

Prerequisites

  • You submit the nomination in writing.
  • When submitting your application, please observe the relevant formal requirements (completeness and correctness of the documents) and deadlines.

Documents required

  • Nomination (list of candidates)
  • Declarations of consent of the candidates
  • Certificates of eligibility for candidates (for EU citizens, affidavits if applicable)
  • Minutes of the nomination meeting of the candidates
  • affidavit about the nomination meeting
  • If applicable: supporting signatures

Deadlines

Deadlines for submitting nominations


European elections: until 6 p.m. on the 83rd day before the election.


Federal election: until 6 p.m. on the 69th day before the election.


Citizens’ election: until 4 p.m. on the 90th day before the election.


District Assembly election: until 4 p.m. on the 90th day before the election.

Procedure

  • You request the necessary documents or forms from the responsible federal, state, district or regional electoral office.
  • You provide all the required information and submit the forms along with the necessary documents to the responsible authority. Depending on the responsible authority, an online portal may also be available for this purpose.

Processing time

The applicant will usually receive an initial assessment of admissibility upon submission. The final decision is made by the electoral committee responsible for admission. Processing time depends on the individual case.

Legal remedies

The relevant committees decide on the admission or rejection of nominations. Appeals against the decision can be filed with the relevant body. The applicable regulations can be found in the relevant electoral laws.
