Museums Museum for Hamburg History

Opened in 1922, the beautiful Museum for Hamburg History brings the city's fascinating 1,200-year history to life through events and exhibits.

Find everything worth knowing about Hamburg. Hamburg Museum opened its doors to the public in 1922.

Museum for Hamburg History

From the early days of Hammaburg Castle in the 7th century to present-day Hamburg, the city’s history is brought to life at the Museum for Hamburg History. Even the building itself — a masterpiece by renowned architect Fritz Schumacher — has become an important part of Hamburg’s history. The permanent exhibits housed inside will guide you from medieval Hamburg and the city's rise to power as a member of the Hanseatic League to today’s fully automated modern port. Next to all things maritime, the museum illustrates various other topics such as Jewish life in Hamburg, emigration to the Americas, bourgeois life in the city, and fashion throughout the centuries.

The miniature railway system and the glass-roofed inner courtyard make a visit to the Hamburg Museum all the more necessary. And don't forget that the small museum in the Krameramtsstuben historic houses, which gives a glimpse of Hamburg life in the 1850s, is also part of the Hamburg Museum.

With so many exhibits, you won't soon run out of things to see, but if spanning 1,200 years of Hamburg history isn’t enough, keep your eyes open for special events too!

As of February 2024: Comprehensive Modernisation

The Museum for Hamburg History is expected to undergo extensive modernisation until 2027. Structural changes are planned, for example to improve accessibility and optimise the museum's infrastructure. This also includes opening up the building to the neighbouring Planten un Blomen park with a new museum restaurant. In addition, the permanent exhibition is to be redesigned in order to respond to current perspectives.
