For five days in September 2018, Hamburg presented itself at the 25th World Congress for Intelligent Traffic and Transportation Systems (ITS) in Copenhagen, where the BWVI Ministry of Economy, Transport & Innovation as well as Hamburger Hochbahn AG and Hamburg Verkehrsanlagen GmbH, presented their current projects. At the same time, the city-owned ITS Hamburg 2021 GmbH was busy networking, on the lookout for cooperation partners, sponsors and visitors for the 2021 World Congress in Hamburg.

On 19 September, State Secretary Dr. Torsten Sevecke hosted a reception for current and future cooperation partners, and Hamburg Invest took part in a networking event for startups. Under the slogan 'Quality of Life', the Danish capital hosted a trade fair and a convention that was attended by thousands of visitors and hundreds of organisations from more than 100 different countries. They learned about topics like mobility services, environmental protection, automatic and interconnected driving, city logistics, satellite technology and transgressive mobility networks.

Next to city representatives, the 225 square metre area at the trade fair made room for twelve different companies and organisations from all over Germany. Among them were the Volkswagen Group ― which has maintained a strategic partnership with the city of Hamburg since August 2016 ― as well as the 'Smart City' partners Deutsche Bahn, Siemens Mobility, T-Systems, Bosch and Fraunhofer.

Hamburger Hochbahn AG presented its HEAT project for autonomous driving, while the Volkswagen subsidiary MOIA introduced attendees to a ridesharing service relying on electric cars. While at the times of the 2018 ITS World Congress MOIA was preparing its launch, the company is now operational in Hamburg.

State Secretary for Economy, Transportation and Innovation Dr. Torsten Sevecke said of the event, 'Hamburg presents itself confidently in Copenhagen. We want to become Germany’s model city for intelligent traffic and logistics solutions. Not only do we want that because of the World Congress in three years. Even after 2021, our citizens should be able to enjoy safer, greener, more efficient and more comfortable mobility and city logistics.'

Harry Evers, CEO of ITS Hamburg 2021 GmbH, said, 'There’s huge national and international interest in our ambitious plan. We want to make sure that the World Congress will be a milestone on the way to making Hamburg one of the leading cities for digital innovation in Europe.'

The ITS World Congress 2021 will be hosted by the European industry and stakeholder association ERTICO from 11 - 15 October 2021 at the CCH and Messehallen convention centres under the slogan 'Experience Future Mobility Now'. Hamburg's bid to host the event was successful thanks in large part to help from the Volkswagen Group. Some of the event's main topics will be automatic and interconnected driving, port logistics, intelligent infrastructures, mobility services, drones, blockchain and artificial intelligence.

The 2019 ITS World Congress took place in Singapore. The 2020 ITS World Congress was scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, but had to be canceled due to the covid-19 coronavirus.
