At 4 million sqm, Ohlsdorf Cemetery is it the largest cemetery park in the world. Since 1877 it has become a final resting place for 1.4 million Hamburgers. Graves, mausoleums, chapels and memorials are arranged beautifully under trees and along the banks of canals and ponds.
Approximately 1.2 million people visit the cemetery every year. Some of them take a quiet and peaceful stroll, others seek out the burial places of famous Hamburg citizens like actor Hans Albers, author Wolfgang Borchert, former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt or physicists Heinrich and Gustav Hertz.
