Hamburg International Music Festival

Music lovers can look forward to the third edition of the Hamburg International Music Festival, held from 27 April to 30 May 2018. Under the banner of “Utopia”, artists from Hamburg, Austria, France, Italy, Great Britain and the USA join forces to perform 62 concerts, ranging from Verdi’s Requiem to Stockhausen’s visionary compositions.

The festival opens with a performance of Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnis” by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. Other highlights include the Verdi Requiem performed by the choir and orchestra of the Scala opera house in Milan, several arias by American mezzo soprano Joyce DiDonato, and concerts of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Finally, there will be the world premiere of Jan Dvořák’s Gothic opera “Frankenstein” on Sunday, 20 May.

The programme also pays homage to the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, one of the most important post-war German composers. His influence reached far beyond classical music and inspired compositions by the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Björk and Aphex Twin.
