The Backbone of Hamburg's Port
The Köhlbrand Bridge (German: Köhlbrandbrücke) serves two main purposes: to sort and organise road traffic in the port while also allowing ships on the River Elbe to reach the important port areas on the southern Elbe banks. This makes it a vital link between land and waterways.
The Köhlbrand Bridge is one of the key elements along the main harbour route. Part of the B3 federal highway, it directly connects the eastern and western harbour areas. This efficiently interlinks port businesses, transhipment facilities and logistics locations – without long detours or additional strain on adjacent neighbourhoods. The Köhlbrand Bridge thus enables a complex-yet-reliable web of labour made up of businesses located within and around the port.
Driving the German Economy
The Port of Hamburg is one of Germany's largest economic centres and the third-largest port in Europe. Fulfilling its role as an international hub requires an efficient connection between the flow of goods through Hamburg and the surrounding areas of Germany and Europe. Germany’s excellent national rail and road network, into which the Port of Hamburg is integrated, seamlessly facilitates this connection. An important and efficient link between the port and the surrounding motorways, the Köhlbrand Bridge helps ensure smooth and rapid transport of goods by road.
A Bridge Under Heavy Use
The Köhlbrand Bridge has connected Hamburg's port to the city for over 50 years, bearing an enormous load: 37,000 vehicles per working day, including over 12,000 trucks. In particular, the transport of heavy goods has a disproportionate impact on the bridge's structure.
Dating back to the 1970s, the structure was not designed to withstand this kind of continuous stress. Back then, the issue of material fatigue – i.e., gradual weakening caused by constant stress – was given little attention. Today we know that these factors are crucial to the service life of a structure. Material fatigue and structural damage cannot be repaired and, in the long run, prevent technically and economically sensible (and therefore justifiable) maintenance.
A Strategic Change of Course for the Port
The Köhlbrand Bridge is also of outstanding importance in terms of maritime traffic: in 2024, a total of 4,271 vessels passed beneath it, accounting for approximately 63 per cent of all maritime traffic in Hamburg. With a clearance height of 53 metres, it restricts nautical accessibility and thus the development of the port areas along the southern Elbe banks.
The new construction, with a clearance height of 73.5 metres, will meet modern maritime shipping requirements. This is key to securing and expanding the long-term potential of the adjacent areas, as the new structure's lifetime is expected to exceed 100 years. The neighbouring infrastructure includes container handling as well as the Sustainable Energy Hub, an area for the production and handling of new climate-friendly energy sources.
Outlook on the Schedule
The decision on the official planning approval is expected to be made in the early 2030s. This will be followed by the construction of the new bridge. It is planned to be open to traffic by the end of the decade.
