Intelligent Parking is one of the six areas of action within the Hamburg Senate’s Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) strategy. Autonomous parking is valued by experts as an important building block on the way to the automated and connected driving of the future.
As part of the ‘SynCoPark’ project, valet parking will be available at the Elbphilharmonie concert hall’s parking lot. Not just any valet parking, however. Everything between drop off and pick up will be automated. The first tests in the 435-space Elbphilharmonie parking garage are expected to begin in the second half of 2020.
Scientists at the University of Braunschweig Institute of Technology’s Center for Automotive Engineering (NFF) have been working hard on bringing autonomous parking to Germany.
A newly built research car park at Braunschweig Airport is currently being equipped with digital infrastructure to be used as a test field for parking processes in various automation levels with specially equipped research vehicles for real demonstrations. The joint project ‘SynCoPark’ aims to go beyond that and develop standards for the qualification and certification of digital infrastructure in parking garages and in vehicles. The project’s goal is not only to create new state-of-the-art automated car parks, but also to retrofit existing parking garages to offer automated parking operations there as well. The project is supported by a multitude of partners such as the Institute of Automotive Engineering (IfF), the Institute for Automotive Industry and Industrial Production (AIP), the Mobility Law Research Center, APCOA PARKING Deutschland GmbH, EDAG Engineering GmbH, GOLDBECK GmbH, NavCert GmbH, PRETHERM GmbH, Allianz für die Region GmbH, ITS Deutschland GmbH, Leica Geosystems GmbH, Volkswagen AG and the BMW Group.
In the second half of 2020, the findings from Braunschweig will be transferred to the car park in the Elbphilharmonie. They are focusing their efforts on ensuring that autonomous parking is possible at the Elbphilharmonie during the ITS World Congress 2021.
