Container Ships and Global Trade
The large container ships that regularly glide along the Elbe are a familiar sight in Hamburg. For many people they symbolise long journeys, global trade and the fascination of life at sea.
One of the companies operating these vessels is Hapag-Lloyd. The liner shipping company runs a global network with around 388 locations in 129 countries and a fleet of more than 230 container ships.
Each year the company transports millions of containers across the world’s oceans. Around 98 percent of global general cargo is carried by container ships, making liner shipping companies such as Hapag-Lloyd a key part of international trade.
Here you can find open positions at Hapag-Lloyd.
From Historic Shipping Lines to Global Carrier
Hapag-Lloyd was created in 1970 through the merger of two historic German shipping companies: Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG), founded in 1847, and Norddeutscher Lloyd, founded in Bremen in 1857.
Today the company operates liner services on more than 120 routes connecting ports on all five continents. With its global network and modern container fleet, Hapag-Lloyd has become one of the world’s largest container shipping companies.
Headquarters in Hamburg
Hapag-Lloyd’s headquarters are located on Ballindamm in central Hamburg. The company employs around 13,200 people worldwide and operates offices and agencies in more than 100 countries.
Jobs and Career Opportunities
Working for a global shipping company does not necessarily mean going to sea. Hapag-Lloyd offers a wide range of career opportunities both on board its ships and in offices around the world.
At sea, the company employs nautical and technical specialists. On land, jobs range from shipping clerks and logistics specialists to positions in IT, marketing, finance and management. Legal experts, for example, may work as claims managers responsible for reviewing contracts with service providers.
Hapag-Lloyd is also known as a training company and offers apprenticeships and vocational training programmes both on land and at sea.
