Hamburg can rightfully be called Germany's media capital. No fewer than 110,000 employees and 23,000 companies are active here in this key industry. Besides long-established publishing houses such as Gruner+Jahr, Axel Springer, Spiegel, Die Zeit and dpa, Hamburg is also a major hub in the digital media industry.

Digital media

Google, Facebook, Twitter and Yelp are some of the global enterprises that have set up office in Hamburg, while startups such as Xing, Jimdo, myTaxi, and Stuffle have their bases here. An especially booming branch is game development. With 4,000 jobs at 150 different companies — including Goodgame Studios, Bigpoint and Innogames — Hamburg has earned its nickname of 'Gamecity'.

Initiatives and projects

The cluster initiative Hamburg@work (German only) is the city's private business association which serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and contacts within Hamburg's media, IT and telecommunications industries. Together with the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the association funds nextMedia.Hamburg, a regional initiative for the promotion of Hamburg as a prime startup location for the digital media industry.
