Logistics and the Port of Hamburg
For centuries, Hamburg's harbour has been an international hub ― the region’s economic driving force. With over 3,000 export companies, Hamburg is among Europe’s leading cities in foreign trade. For example, Chinese companies alone make up 400 of Hamburg's international export companies. Together with the many warehousing, transport, shipping and mail order companies that cover the German market, 154,000 Hamburgers work in the logistics industry.
To further promote and develop this multifaceted industry, the State Ministry of Economic and Labour Affairs together with Hamburg’s business community established the Logistics Initiative Hamburg. Today, this cluster functions as a governing body for 500 different companies.
Combining Business, Science and Research
The cluster’s goal is to strengthen the bond between business, science and research in both the city and the surrounding metropolitan area (which ads an additional 80,000 people to the logistics industry workforce). The promotion of innovation and constant knowledge exchange are top priorities, helping all cluster members to prosper and grow. To this end, the cluster organises regular workshops and conferences, establishes cross-sectoral research groups and maintains close contact to the region’s universities.
The initiative lends its voice to the companies and functions as a stakeholder for their ideas, requirements and interests. Furthermore, it aims to create new jobs in the region, and promotes Hamburg as a first-class business location.
