Job Interview

You applied for a job in Hamburg and are invited for an interview? Congratulations! Read here what to expect.

How to handle a job interview in Hamburg

Your first and foremost goal after having sent in your job application is an invitation for a job interview. At the interview, you’ll have the chance to introduce yourself in person, meet your potential future employer and convince them that you are the most qualified applicant.

Come prepared

The aim of most job interviews is a combination of assessing your skills and personality to see if you’re a good fit with the team. It’s also a chance for you to get a clearer idea of the job. Prepare by reading up on the company’s activities and the general state of the field you’ll be working in. Showing interest by asking questions is always appreciated.

Formal language

Professional situations - and job interviews especially - are handled formally in Germany. Introduce yourself with your first and last name, and address everyone else by their surnames. If your German language-skills allow for it, be sure to use the “Sie” form - unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Money talks

Most employers request you to include your preferred yearly gross salary already in your cover letter. If you haven’t done so yet, you can be asked about your ‘price tag’ at the end of the interview. Inform yourself about the market beforehand and be ready to state a number.

You’ll hear from us

After you’ve shaken hands and said your goodbyes, the waiting begins. You can expect a phone call if you’re hired, or invited for a second interview. If you’re declined, it’s more common to receive an email or letter. Remember: you can always ask for feedback!
