New Town ─ Neustadt

Walking Route: Hamburg New Town (Neustadt)

Your trip starts at Stadthausbrücke S-Bahn station: from here it is only a stone's throw to the “Kleiner Michel” church. It is the predecessor of the much larger St. Michael's Church, which you will find after a short walk along the legendary Cotton jazz club and Großneumarkt square. You can't miss the high bell tower from which you have the most magnificent view over Hamburg. A little towards the West you can find the Komponistenviertel (lit. composers' quarter) with museums dedicated to Brahms and Telemann ─ both composers were born in Hamburg. Just a short walk from there you'll find another museum, and a truly great one at that: the Hamburg Museum (Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte) is Germany's largest municipal history museum. Your way leads you along Planten un Blomen park until you reach the magnificent Laeiszhalle concert hall, which has been the home of classical music in Hamburg for the past century. After passing the Gängeviertel alternative art community and the Engelsaal theatre, your final destination will be Gänsemarkt square.
