Whether you're importing your car from back home or buying a new one in Hamburg, here's how to get the paperwork in order.

Car registration in Hamburg

All motor vehicles, whether new or used, need to be registered with the LBV - Hamburg’s central traffic office. Registration results in a Hamburg license plate and official documentation necessary to be permitted to join road traffic. As the owner of a registered motor vehicle, you’re also obliged to pay vehicle taxes (Kfz-Steuer) and vehicle insurance.

To register your vehicle, book an appointment at the LBV and select Kfz-Zulassung (Anmeldung, Ummeldung und mehr).


To register a new vehicle, select:
Z04 - Zulassung eines fabrikneuen Fahrzeugs
Required documents: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6

To register a change of ownership of a used vehicle bought within Hamburg, select:
Z05 - Umschreibung innerhalb HH (mit Halterwechsel)
Required documents: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8

To register a change of ownership of a used vehicle bought outside of Hamburg, select:
Z06 - Umschreibung von außerhalb HH
Required documents: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8

To register an imported, new vehicle, select:
Z14 - Zulassung Importfahrzeug (Neufahrzeug)
Required documents: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11

To register an imported, used vehicle, select:
Z15 - Zulassung Importfahrzeug (Gebrauchtfahrzeug)
Required documents: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11

  • Select a location, preferred date and time
  • Confirm your appointment by email
  • Collect all necessary paperwork, see below
  • Bring the confirmation email with you to the appointment

  1. Valid identification and proof of residence (Meldebescheinigung)
  2. eVB-code: electronic vehicle insurance confirmation (Kfz-Versicherung)
  3. Completed SEPA payment form for vehicle taxation, download here
  4. Licence certificate part I (vehicle registration document)
  5. Licence certificate part II (vehicle identification document)
  6. Certificate of Conformity
  7. Proof of completed general inspection (TÜV) and safety inspection
  8. Licence plates
  9. Vehicle documentation from abroad, and official translation
  10. Custom clearance certificate (non-EU)
  11. Proof of Ownership
